Six Flags Joins The Blogging Community

Working in directly the opposite direction of this site, Six Flags has started a blog at the corporate level. And by opposite, I mean they started with Facebook and Twitter and moved to the blogsphere, whereas Coasterdom started a blog, and bounced into Twitter and Facebook later. Origin stories aside, this could be a cool opportunity to share corporate news with the coaster community without going through the typical media sources i.e. the newspaper companies. It will be nice to be able to link back to Six Flags, as opposed …

Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom Gets The Ax

In a press release given out by Six Flags just over an hour ago, the Kentucky Kingdom park is being closed permanently. Citing a breakdown in lease negotiation with the Kentucky State Fair Board, the park will be closed immediately and permanently.  The press release from Sixflags.com is quoted below.

“Six Flags announced today that as it nears the scheduled end of its restructuring process, it has decided to reject its lease with the Kentucky State Fair Board relating to the Kentucky Kingdom park. In recent weeks, Six Flags had proposed a …

Carowind’s Intimidator Has Hit The Ground Running

Carowinds Twitter account has announced that the Intimidator roller coaster has completed its first test run successfully. The video can be seen right here.

It looks like a nice roller coaster, I have always thought so, but it really doesn’t have a lot of “oomph” while going through its course. Of course it was only the first run, and I understand that things change as the ride heats up (it looked especially cold there in the video) so I’ll withhold any true judgment until then.
In any event, it looks like a …

At the End of Trading…

If you follow @Coasterdom on twitter (and if you don’t, shame on you!) you know that I have started a brand new feature. Every day I will be posting the closing prices of the three biggest amusement park companies in the business: Disney, Cedar Fair and Blackstone. (It should be noted that if you feel that I have forgotten, or left out a company, please do tell me! I assure you it wasn’t intentional, merely a slip in my memory.) And at the end of every week (Saturday or Sunday) …

More information can be found from the links below, but I hope you all take advantage of this really neat opportunity!

Cedar Fair Is Going… Going… Sold?

Apollo Management, whom you may know as the owners of AMC Entertainment, one of the (arguably) largest movie theater chains in the United States, is making a move to purchase Cedar Fair, whom you certainly know as the owner of Cedar Point, Knott’s Berry Farm, Dorney Park, etc. All of this is according to a story from the Sandusky Register, which I was linked to via Pointbuzz.

This sale could mean a new management style at the park – although I doubt it. In fact, I doubt we’ll see a really …

Amusement Insider’s TOC2

For those of you not familiar, Amusement Insider is a neat forum that is currently hosting its’ second “Tournament of Champions”. The theme of this tournament is “Florida’s Open Challenge” in which a coaster from a Florida park takes on its’ counterparts in other parts of the United States. A new poll opens every Monday, Wednesday and Friday and out of the three contestants the best two advance – much like American Idol if you’re familiar with that system. I’m not, but this is what I have been told.
So I …

Ever since I was a kid, one of my favorite things to do was to throw spare change into a fountain. I don’t know why, I have always just enjoyed doing it. Well it looks like someone is getting use out of that spare change. Hersheypark collects the money from their fountains and waterways every year and donates it to the Children’s Miracle Network. This year they raised over $12,000! Pretty incredible stuff. The full press release is below.
