Goliath (SFMM) Review
Looming at 255 feet in the air, Goliath is a Magic Mountain staple. The only classic example of a hyper coaster in California, Goliath is flocked to by thrill seekers all summer long.
This Giovanola creation is a seemingly B&M inspired design, a graceful airtime hill (See any B&M Hyper) and intense helixes (see Batman: The Ride). As soon as you pull out of the station and up the slow lift hill you get a great view of what’s to come. Some great turning drops, a helix and a large airtime hill after a turn around that follows the first drop.
Once you reach the peak of the hill, the chain slows down (which is hard to believe, it’s already so slow) and you wait.. still waiting… and then you drop. The back seat on this drop is phenomenal, you lift out of your seat and if you dare to keep your arms up through the seemingly tiny tunnel you will get an adrenaline rush like no other.
You climb back up another hill and into a banked turn around before plunging back down once again. An airtime hill follows which (occassionaly) will lift you up and out of your seat before taking you back down and then up onto the rides Mid Course Brake Run and into the rest of the ride’s twisting layout.
The rest is a blur, by the time you reach the renowned helix you are starting to get fuzzy, and you seemingly black out during the helix which then deposits you out at the final brake run.
Goliath is a solid attraction, and in the back seat it really is a lot of fun. While it certainly is not my favorite ride at the Mountain, it’s a nice break from the many inversions of the various B&M’s across the park.
Goliath gets a 3.5/5 because while it’s great in the back and the front, the rest of the train is simply “okay”.
