This Ain’t Your Granddad’s Whip
GordonRides and DynamicDesigns have unveiled a new take on an old classic – The Whip. Now the closest I have come to riding one of these bad boys (the classics, I mean) is the kiddiewhip at Knott’s Berry Farm when I was seven years old. However, as most of our east coast members (Yeah, pretty much everyone but me) could tell you, these rides back a heck of a punch.
So why change something that has proven successful for over fifty years? (My grandparents talk about The Whip at Coney Island, and they haven’t been there since they lived in New York – nearly thirty years ago). One word: Customization.
For those of you that have never seen a Whip before (I can’t imagine there are many of you out there) it is set up in an oval patter with the cars all along the outside. The cars would spin around the center and would “Whip out” towards the edges around curves, offering a very exciting ride.
What these guys are doing with this classic attraction is “Plussing” it (Plussing = Modifying, or advancing the product in Disney terminology) by giving it the ability to have a real, customizable layout with theming and everything! To say that I am excited about this ride is a huge understatement. The idea of being able to ride a Whip in California (If one of my home park purchases one, of course) is a very exciting prospect.
So what are your guy’s thoughts on this new spin on a classic ride? Bring it on? Or don’t mess with a good thing?

Very cool idea. I have always loved the whip and there are very few originals remaining. Dorney has the best one I’ve ever been on, it really gets you around the turn. Hershey has one as well but it just doesn’t move fast enough to be a lot of fun.
Great idea. Looks like a fun ride. There should me more flat rides like this… something everyone will get on.
