Adventureland
The time is 1987, the place is “Adventureland” (Played by Kennywood in West Mifflin, Pennsylvania), the lead is Jesse Eisenberg. A college graduate that is forced to take up a summer job at the.. less than shining example of a good amusement park in order to pay for graduate school.
This isn’t a movie blog, so I won’t deeply delve into the many facets of this movie directed by Superbad director Greg Mottola. However I will tell you that it’s a very entertaining representation of a teen that gets “stuck” working at a never was, local amusement park. You get to see some great flats in action, a few coaster shots, and just how rigged those carny games are.
Adventureland isn’t about the amusement park, and although msot of the action takes place inside the park, don’t expect to see Kristen Stewart riding Phantom’s Revenge or Jesse Eisenberg taking a spin on the Jack Rabbit. It’s a great coming of age tale that uses the great locale of an amusement park as the butt of most of it’s jokes.
I would encourage you to go see it (Remember, it’s rated R) just not if your only reason to see it lies in the “I just want to see some Phantom’s Revenge action” category.

Don’t know why you would pay $7+ to go see a movie just for some Coasters in action. Kind of like Pay-Per-View Porn. :p
It looks like a very good movie. I hope to see it once it comes on to the cheap theaters in my city.
I don’t know why you would either, I’m sure there’s someone that hard core coaster enthusiast around, right?
It really is a fun movie, and not anywhere near as.. immature as Superbad was.
I like that it is about amusement parks, but that is also the problem. The previews make it sound like working at an amusement park is a job that a monkey can do. While that view may be shared by some, it presents an unfair view.
Also the whole by the director of Superbad did not make we want to see it at all. I didn’t care for that move. I know IAAPA’s blog had a big write defending the industry.
Also remember that this took place in 1987 at a low everything amusement park. So.. anyone who is “offended” that it gives an honest portrayal (like it or not, I’ve had experiences that could lead to this point of view) of a crappy amusement park, is taking this way too seriously.
I didn’t care for Superbad, but this was much different (as I said in my previous comment) both in tone and.. well everything else!
Superbad was o.k. Adventureland was a bit better. The setting of the film really did make the movie interesting though… and not just because I’m a coaster enthusiast… it’s just a setting that really works for a teenage drama/coming of age story.
