Texas Giant and other SF news

Six Flags held their year end conference call the other day and boy did they give us some interesting information. The first of which is that Six Flags Over Texas’ Texas Giant is going to be closed for all of the 2010 season. It will receive a 10 million dollar rehab! According to the article, “This would be the largest ride renovation in the history of the company. New trains, a more comfortable ride, a faster ride with additional features all with the intention of restoring this famed coaster to world class status.”
Six Flags Chief Executive Mark Shapiro said he likes the “rickety nature’ of wooden coasters like the Texas Giant, but says it needs a smoother, faster ride and will have new trains installed as part of the renovation.
“The Giant is so huge. It’s turned into a dinosaur,” Shapiro said. “It needs a new life and we’re going to breathe new life into it.” (Star Telegram)
As if a 10 million dollar (you could almost get two new wooden coasters for that) rehad wasn’t enough, the company plans of celebrating big time for their 50th anniversary. They plan on adding a major new attraction to every property.
I find it fasicinating that the company is so optomistic during these tough times. The certinaly are not afraid to spend a little cash. Luckily, they have been making some wise spending decisions over the past year or so. Hopefully that will help them turn the corner and become a company that becomes about quailty.

I believe that they can afford to make big decisions because all of these “financial problems” are not their own!
This is real good news.
Good point Jake… the amusement industry doesn’t seem to be having any real trouble lately at all.
Now CP can do the same with Mean Streak!
