Chinese Disneyland?
Apparently, the Beijing-area Shijingshan Amusement Park has been featuring Mickey and Minnie, Donald Duck, Goofy and the rest of the Walt Disney Co gang, as well as settings such as Cinderella’s Castle right out of the Magic Kingdom.
Until recently, the park even marketed itself with the slogan, “Disneyland is Too Far.” Park officials vehemently protest that they’ve broken any type of copyright violations, and say their characters are very different from Disney’s. Afterall, Cinderella, Snow White, and others were birthed by the Brother’s Grimm, not Walt Disney and his brothers. Yin Zhiaiang, the park’s deputy general manager, told the AP “the characters in our park just look a little bit similar to theirs. But the faces, clothes, size, and appearances are different.” He said that Cinderella looks like a Chinese country girl, not Disney’s European figure. Here is a great video of exactly what the park has to offer.
This is one of those stories that just makes you wonder about the world. The park has copied ever facet of Disney, and still denies it. While this is less about amusement parks and more about foreign relations and intellectual property rights, it’s a story that will make you laugh. Apparently the park is in the process of getting rid of the Disney characters and placing the mascots of the upcoming Olympics in their place.
